There is no legal definition for "old vine." No minimum age, no governing body, no single standard. What exists instead is a language — Vieilles Vignes in France, vigna vecchia in Italy, viña vieja in Spain, Alte Reben in Germany, ancestor vines in South Africa — spoken differently everywhere, but pointing toward the same idea: that age matters.

In this School of DECANT master class, led by Gillian Ballance, MS, we'll explore why. The youngest vines we'll discuss were planted in the 1970s. The oldest fall into centenarian territory — over 100 years in the ground, survivors of drought, disease, phylloxera, and time. We'll talk about what it takes to farm these vineyards, why so many have been lost, and why the ones that remain are worth protecting.

Along the way, we'll taste through the regions and varieties that have the strongest old vine traditions, and build a framework for understanding what age actually does in the glass — the concentration, the complexity, the sense of place that younger vines rarely achieve.

Cancellation Policy: Full refunds are available until 72 hours before the event. After that, any cancellations will receive a 50% refund in the form of store credit. No-shows forfeit any refund.

This event is 21+.

Do you allow refunds to events?

Please note refund policies in the description of each individual event, as DESTINATION DECANT, Winter Fête, and Private Tastings have different policies.

Default policy unless otherwise noted: DECANTsf will refund 100% of your event ticket purchase to the original form of payment if you cancel via email or phone call up to 72 hours of the event start time.

You may transfer your ticket to another guest.

DECANTsf will refund up to 50% of ticket price (less taxes, promos, or fees) in the form of store credit for cancellations within 72 hours of the event.

No-shows forfeit any refund or credit.

Tickets purchased with gift cards are not eligible for refund.

Can I purchase event tickets with a gift card?

YES. Gift cards can be redeemed for event tickets. However, refunds will not be given for any cancellations of tickets purchased with a gift card.

Do events discount?

Subscribed CLUB MEMBERS get a 10% Discount to most events at DECANTsf, unless otherwise specified. Club Members have a personal Promo Code to enter at check out. Club members get a max of two discounted tickets per event.

Can I bring my dog?

DECANTsf allows certified service animals as outlined by City, State, and Federal Law.

We politely decline attendance by any animals outside of those guidelines due to San Francisco Department of Health rules.

Can I bring my kid?

DECANTsf is a 21+ space, so no children, including infants, are allowed inside or on the patio.

Can I sit with my friends?

Send us a note if you are meeting anyone at our events, and we'll do our best to accommodate seating requests.

What if I have a food allergy?

Please contact us regarding any food allergies, and we will do our best to accommodate. Food Allergies may not be accommodated for classes with guest chefs, but we will do our best. Send us a note to events@decantsf.com with any concerns.
