From Our 2025 Bottle Cult Notes:
“Mestratge” means “mentorship” in Catalan, and this bottle feels like a passing of the torch—from teacher to student, from tradition to thoughtful innovation. Crafted by Miquel Medall and his former student-turned-partner Jaume Colet, this wine is a tribute
to mentorship, heritage, and the expressive power of native grapes. Their project, Vins Identitaris, is rooted in the limestone hills of Massís del Garraf, a rugged subzone of Penedès, Catalonia, where the cool Mediterranean breeze meets ancient calcareous soils.
The duo works organically, eschewing synthetic inputs in favor of ecological balance. Their vineyards are planted to indigenous varieties—Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and the rare Malvasía de Sitges—each chosen for its ability to reflect the region’s character. In
“Mestratge” Blanc, Xarel·lo takes the lead (95%), offering structure and salinity, while a touch of the rarer Malvasía de Sitges (5%) brings aromatic lift and a hint of exotic fruit.
Fermented with native yeasts and aged five months on fine lees in stainless steel, followed by seven months in bottle, this wine is a study in precision and restraint. It opens with aromas of citrus peel, white peach, and wild herbs—think thyme and fennel
fronds—before revealing a palate that’s both textural and vibrant. There’s a mineral edge that speaks to the Garraf’s chalky soils, and a saline finish that lingers like sea spray on a warm breeze.
This is a white wine that rewards attention but doesn’t demand it—ideal for a sun-drenched lunch of grilled sardines, a crisp fennel salad, or a wedge of soft goat cheese. Serve it lightly chilled and let it unfold at its own pace. —Simi Grewal, DECANT co-founder
