Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855 : Château Léoville Poyferré, established in 1840 when Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré added his name to Léoville.
- Winemaker: Didier Cuvelier
- Farming: Sustainable, HVE3
- Variety: Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
- Terroir: Maritime climate, on terraces of Mindel gravel, sandy-clay subsoil in the Leoville Poyferré vineyards.
- Tasting Note: A sensuous cherry-flavored nose. Balanced. Medium bodied with tarry black fruits. Quite smooth. This is a beautiful Claret of great purity, that’s ageing very well. Lovely blackcurrant fruit nose with minerally, spicy depth. The palate has good structure and presence under the generous, pure, sweet fruit.
- Scores: 92 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Léoville Poyferré has one of the most harmonious and complete bouquets from Saint Julien: very well-defined blackberry, briary and chalky scents, real focus and delivery here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannin matched with well-judged acidity. Like the 2006 Léoville-Barton, it is stubborn and backward, but there is clearly harmony and focus on the finish, the new oak deftly assimilated in the fabric of the wine. This is a lovely wine from Didier Cuvelier.
