With origins dating back to the first half of the 17th century by founder Melchior Safran, the domaine has been registered to his heirs since 1641, the date upon which it was designed as: land, a country house, vineyard, olive grove, and filbert grove. The soils ar carefully preserved by light work in the autumn and spring to maintain the mineral complexity. The low yields mean all the personality of this vineyard terroir is highly concentrated in the grapes.
The clay slopes receive sunrise exposure each day from the Bay of Bandol and the rocky inlet of the Port of Alone. The limestone subsoil and chalky marl make it the favourite of the Mourvèdre grape, the king variety in the Bandol wine region. “Feet in the water, the head in the sun!” There is no better way to characterize this native Mediterranean variety native.
Harvested as soon as they ripen, the bunches are hand-collected and placed in small transport boxes. At the winery, the produce is fully respected to produce white and rosé wines through direct pressing and red wines with long maceration periods of 18 to 24 months in oak barrels to enhance their complexity.

There’s a sense of permanence to this wine—a feeling that it’s been here far longer than we have. Domaine Lafran-Veyrolles, one of the top estates in Bandol, dates back to the early 1600s when Melchior Safran registered it as a mosaic of land, vineyard, olive, and filbert groves. Today, it’s run by Jean-Marie Castell, who stewards just 10 hectares of vines on the prized red clay soils of Bandol. The estate is tucked into the hillsides of La Cadière d’Azur, where maritime breezes stretch out the ripening season and help preserve the vibrant core of the fruit. Farming here is fully organic and hands-off—just as it should be—relying on minimal sulfur and extremely low yields to keep everything honest, expressive, and rooted in place.
This rosé is a product of intention. The Mourvèdre-dominant blend grows on clay slopes that catch the sunrise over the Bay of Bandol and the rocky inlet of Port d’Alon, with deep limestone and chalky marl below—a soil mix Mourvèdre calls home. There’s a local saying: “feet in the water, head in the sun,” which sums up the grape’s ideal conditions here. Grapes are picked at perfect ripeness, carried carefully in small boxes, and vinified with a blend of direct press and a touch of saignée, then fermented at low temperatures to preserve nuance and lift.
The result is a rosé with quiet poise and depth. Pale and shimmering in the glass, it opens with soft herbs and white flowers, giving way to stone fruit, white pepper, and a pinch of warm spice. It’s refreshing without being simple, structured yet breezy—an effortless companion to summer seafood, grilled vegetables, or just a warm night outdoors.
