Rosso Di Montalcino and Tuscany
ITALY

Tre Contrade is a rising estate in Montalcino producing expressive, site-driven Sangiovese from sustainably farmed vineyards. Their Rosso di Montalcino offers an early glimpse into the vintage and house style—crafted for freshness, immediacy, and pure varietal character while the Brunello rests in the cellar. With a focus on minimal intervention and traditional techniques, Tre Contrade delivers classic Tuscan energy with finesse and drinkability.

  • PROPRIETORS: Romano Chietti and Maria Grazia Salvioni

  • FARMING: Sustainable

  • VARIETY: 100% Sangiovese

  • TERROIR: Vineyards sit at 320 meters above sea level on a mix of clay and sand soils; vine age averages 20–25 years.

  • VINIFICATION: Fermentation in stainless steel to preserve freshness and varietal purity.

  • AGING: Aged 1 year in large Slavonian oak casks.

  • TASTING NOTES: Tart red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry leap from the glass. The palate is crisp and energetic, with a zippy acidity and clean finish that makes it incredibly drinkable.

  • FOOD PAIRINGS: A natural match for trippa alla fiorentina, but equally at home with tomato-based pastas, grilled sausages, or Pecorino Toscano.

From our 2025 Bottle Cult Notes:

If you’ve been a club member for a while, you probably know about my deep and enduring love for Italian wines. And if one grape sits at the top of my personal hierarchy, it’s Sangiovese. I could go on for days about its charms—whether bright and youthful or gracefully aged—but I’d rather let the wine speak for itself.

Rosso di Montalcino is one of my favorites because it delivers the essence of its more expensive, longer-aged sibling, Brunello, yet still bursts with that sassy punch of fruit and freshness. This particular Rosso comes from Tre Contrade—not an actual winery, but a collaboration between Romano Chietti, founder of Siena Imports, and Tuscan winemaker Maria Grazia Salvoni, director of winemaking of Quercecchio estate in Montalcino. Originally created in 2018 to celebrate Siena’s 40th anniversary, the project was so well-loved that Maria continued producing it exclusively for Siena Imports.

Sourced from vines in the southern part of Montalcino, rooted in clay and sand-rich soils, this wine stays true to tradition: fermented in stainless steel, then aged for a year in used Slavonian oak. The result is a bright, honest expression of Sangiovese—tart red cherries, dusty sandalwood, and fresh tomato leaf on the nose, with a juicy, generous palate and a crisp lift of acidity and tannin. It’s a natural match for a simple seared steak, a hearty bolognese, or really anything that loves good company and a glass of something delicious. —Simi Grewal, DECANT Co-founder
