SAUTERNES and BORDEAUX

Located in the commune of Fargues, just south of the village of Sauternes, Château Roûmieu-Lacoste is a long-established family estate known for producing richly textured, classic sweet wines that balance botrytized opulence with freshness. Now in the hands of the Barrau family, the domaine continues to practice traditional vineyard management and careful, selective harvesting to ensure purity and concentration in every vintage.

  • WINEMAKER: Florence and François Barrau

  • FARMING: Sustainable practices; hand-harvested in multiple passes (“tries”) to select botrytized berries

  • VARIETY: 100% Sémillon

  • TERROIR: Clay-limestone and gravel soils typical of Fargues; proximity to the Ciron and Garonne rivers creates the ideal morning mists and afternoon sun essential for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) development

  • VINIFICATION: Grapes are pressed immediately after each picking pass; fermentation occurs slowly in temperature-controlled stainless steel and oak barrels

  • AGING: Aged 12–18 months in French oak barrels (approximately 25–30% new) to develop texture and aromatic complexity

  • TASTING NOTES: Layers of honeyed apricot, candied citrus peel, and acacia blossom unfold over a silky, luscious palate balanced by bright acidity. Notes of crème brûlée, vanilla, and saffron linger on a long, harmonious finish.

  • FOOD PAIRINGS: Foie gras, blue cheese, fruit tarts, or as a luxurious pairing with spicy Asian dishes.

  • SCORES: 93 – Wine Advocate (barrel sample); 92 – James Suckling (barrel sample)
