Hendry is a historic, family-owned estate situated in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains on the western edge of Napa Valley. Farming the same land since 1939, the Hendry family takes a meticulous, vineyard-first approach, emphasizing sustainability and scientific precision to craft site-specific wines. Their 'HRW' label highlights fruit from younger vines or lots that don’t make it into the estate bottlings, offering exceptional value while maintaining the character and integrity for which Hendry is known. The 'HRW' Zinfandel is a vibrant and accessible expression of Napa-grown Zin, rooted in tradition and careful farming.
-
WINEMAKER: George Hendry
-
FARMING: Sustainable farming practices; the Hendry Ranch is family-farmed with a long-term commitment to soil health, water conservation, and vine balance.
-
VARIETY: 100% Zinfandel
-
TERROIR: Sourced from estate vineyards in the southern benchlands of Napa Valley. The soils are predominantly gravelly loam, offering excellent drainage, while the site benefits from a marine influence from nearby San Pablo Bay, moderating temperatures and preserving acidity. This unique location contributes to Zinfandels with freshness, structure, and balance—distinct from the more opulent styles found in northern Napa.
-
VINIFICATION: Grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts. Gentle pump-overs are used to extract color and structure, followed by malolactic fermentation.
-
AGING: Aged for 10 months in a combination of neutral and lightly used American oak barrels to enhance texture and roundness without dominating the fruit profile.
-
TASTING NOTES: This Zinfandel opens with lifted aromas of black cherry, raspberry compote, and baking spices, followed by a touch of vanilla and cracked pepper. The palate is juicy and fruit-driven, with soft tannins, vibrant acidity, and a medium-bodied frame. Hints of cocoa and dried herbs linger on the smooth, polished finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Pairs effortlessly with BBQ ribs, grilled sausages, wood-fired pizza, or hearty vegetarian dishes like mushroom ragu or lentil stew.
