Founded in 1893, Cantina Terlano has grown into one of the leading wine growers' cooperatives in the Alto Adige region of northeastern Italy. With a current membership of 143 growers farming a total area of 165 hectares, Terlano insures the highest standards of quality by compensating growers for the quality of their grapes not the quantity. The emphasis in the vineyard is on reducing yield in favor of producing more concentrated fruit.
- Winemaker: Rudi Kofler
- Variety: Pinot Bianco
- Teroir: South/Southwest-facing vines planted at 300-600m above sea level. Soils are sandy, mixed with easily warmed porphyric-gravel.
- Vinfication: Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine rests on the lees for six months before release.
- Tasting Notes: With wonderful aromas of apple cider, chalk and lemon zest, this clean and focused wine expands on the palate to reveal warm apple crisp, clove and quince nuances. Possessing a long, concentrated citrus finish, this wine pairs perfectly with roasted pork, shellfish and egg-based sauces or as a charming cocktail beverage.
- Critical Acclaim: 93 points, James Suckling
Cantina/Kellerei Terlan Pinot Bianco, Alto Adige, Italy 2022
Established in 1893, Cantina Terlano is now a prominent wine growers' cooperative in northeastern Italy's Alto Adige region, boasting 143 members cultivating 407 acres. There is a long and rich history of cooperative farming in this part of Italy. Nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, the Dolomite mountains create a dramatic landscape that forces farmers to carve small hillside terraces for the cultivation of vegetables and fruit. The Terlano cooperative prioritizes quality over quantity, compensates growers based on grape quality rather than quantity, and focuses on reducing yields to enhance the concentration of the fruit in the vineyard. They source only sustainably or organically farmed grapes.
Cantina Terlan (or Kellerei, in German, since the region sits on the border of Austria) is widely considered to be one of the finest quality cooperative wine producers in the world. Winemaker Rudi Kofler has built personal relationships with the farmers in the cooperative, ensuring that the operation works like a seamless estate. He oversees the production of four distinct quality lines for their wines: Tradition, Selection, Rarity, and Primo. Tradition, which is featured in this month’s club, is focused purely on the traditional varieties of Alto Adige. Pinot Bianco from this part of the world is at its very best, and Cantina Terlano will make you a believer!
This Pinot Bianco is made in a way that best expresses the power of the grape. The grapes are harvested manually, followed by a careful selection of the highest quality grapes. They are then gently pressed and fermented slowly at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. To soften the acidic edge of the wine, it is aged on its lees in steel tanks for 6-7 months. The wine is versatile and endlessly refreshing. Freshly cut pear and quince aromas combine with a salty minerality to make a thirst-quenching white wine. Pair it with anything from tuna poke to spaghetti carbonara.
