Meet Our Co-Founders
Once introduced during their time studying at the Culinary Institute of America and now taking on the world of wine together. Cara & Simi are bonded by their love of good wine, good food, and making the traditional wine spaces more accessible to everyone. In 2024, Gillian Ballance, MS joined as Partner in Education with the opening of DECANT Napa.

Cara Patricia
https://instagram.com/carapatriciasfKnown for her relaxed style of wine education, Cara Patricia's motto is "Drink for Yourself", a reminder that regardless of the trends and fads of the beverage world, what is most important is what makes YOU happy. Cara has been specializing in wine and beverage since 2008. In September 2015, Cara earned her Advanced Sommelier credentials from the Court of Master Sommeliers. In addition, Cara is WSET Advanced, as well as a Certified Wine Professional (CWP) and Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) through the Culinary Institute of America and Society of Wine Educators, respectively. She also holds certifications as California Wine Appellation Specialist from the San Francisco Wine School and French Wine Scholar from the French Wine Society.
Cara is now living in Napa, CA where she will be at the helm of the new DECANT NAPA, and is the face behind all of DECANT's social media and branding. When she’s not drinking 1er Cru Chablis or Cru Beaujolais, Cara is hanging out with her cat Siouxsie Sioux and playing records. (she/they)

Simi Grewal
Simi’s career with food & wine traces back to her freshman year at NYU when she fully began to realize how much joy she took in cooking. Since then Simi has been immersed in positions from New York City, London, and San Francisco that allowed her to gain a holistic understanding of the hospitality and restaurant industries with a specialization in wine and beverage. Simi holds a Certified Sommelier credential from The Court of Master Sommeliers, as well as a Certified Wine Professional (CWP) and Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) through the Culinary Institute of America and Society of Wine Educators, respectively.
Simi is now the main broad running DECANT SF, and filling your shopping bags with all the Barolo and Brunello you can handle. When she's not immersed in the wine world, she also loves watching European football and hanging with golden retrievers. (she/her)

GILLIAN BALLANCE
We're excited to announce Gillian Ballance, MS, as our new Partner in Education & Events. Gillian is a Master Sommelier with over 20 years of experience leading wine programs at top restaurants, hotels, and resorts across the U.S. She earned her Master Sommelier Diploma in 2012 and holds a Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET). Currently, she serves as the National Education Manager at Treasury Wine Estates and is a member of both the James Beard Foundation Beverage Advisory Board and the Court of Master Sommeliers Board of Directors. Gillian is both a friend and mentor of Cara & Simi, and we're lucky to have her be a part of the next stage of DECANT's future! You'll see her mostly at DECANT Napa on the weekends, and at DECANT SF for classes! (she/her)

Karen Smith
An avid traveler and foodie, Karen Smith didn't start drinking truly great wine until she moved to San Francisco in 2016. An Illinois native and former corporate legal professional, Karen's wine career began in 2022, when she needed something to do and landed a role as a bartender at a boutique wine bar in Hayes Valley. Wishing to build upon her wine bar experience, Karen joined DECANTsf in early 2023, where she helps with administrative shop tasks, bartends, and fills her shopping cart with one of everything. Karen is excited to soon begin her WSET certification journey and continue expanding her wine expertise! You'll find her at DECANTsf, where she makes sure you always get your wine shipments and club orders! (she/her)

Riley Shea
Riley Shea is a young wine professional that has experiences spanning much of the industry and world. They have worked many harvests focused in winemaking and in vineyard management at renowned wineries in Chile, New Zealand and Northern California. She has also followed her passion and drive to self-educate, leading to her WSET Level 3 completion with merit. They also have a strong track record in retail and food and wine service with an affinity for coffee and food as well as wine. They aspire to have a future in wine as diverse as their background, as well as to develop herself in academia as a researcher and advocate for Trans Community health. Riley is at DECANTsf, and don't be shy to ask her for wine recommendations— she knows so much and has great taste! (they/she)

Kaylee Daly
Kaylee Daly’s wine journey started young, growing up in a family that owned a wine touring trolley in Temecula Wine Country. Since then, she’s worn many hats in the wine world, from Wine Director at Cucina Enoteca Del Mar to Sommelier at Chef Christopher Kostow’s The Charter Oak in St. Helena, which first brought her to Napa Valley. Along the way, she’s explored urban wineries, worked in German and Italian wine importing, and even launched her own business during COVID as a private sommelier, pairing wines with amazing chefs in people’s homes. A self-proclaimed "silly goose sommelier," Kaylee is all about creating fun, inclusive wine experiences and breaking away from the usual wine-world pretension. When she’s not at DECANT, she’s hosting Camp Caviar, a Napa tinned fish meetup, dreaming up ideas for an adult summer camp filled with incredible food and wine, or sipping on her favorite wines from Alto Adige—all while working toward becoming Napa’s next Advanced Sommelier. Elì rodriguez
A proud Puerto Rican sommelier who transitioned from a career in IT to pursue his passion for food & wine. After studying at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Italy—where he immersed himself in global culinary and wine traditions from the Slow Food philosophy—he moved to California, completed WSET Level 3 through Wine Unify, and gained experience at Scribe Winery, Under-Study, and now DECANT Napa. With a background in hospitality, leadership, and data-driven problem-solving, Elí is dedicated to creating meaningful connections through food and wine and believes that every product tells a story about culture, craft, and our relationship with the environment.
