Bodegas Frontonio is a small, independent project founded by Fernando Mora MW and Mario López in the overlooked region of Valdejalón, Aragón—the historic birthplace of Garnacha. Working with old bush vines planted on steep, rocky slopes, the duo channels a stripped-back, traditional approach, aging wines in underground caves carved into stone. The name and ethos of the winery honor Saint Frontonio, a martyr who, legend says, swam upstream—just like this unconventional, site-driven Garnacha.
-
WINEMAKER: Fernando Mora MW & Mario López
-
FARMING: Dry-farmed, sustainably cultivated bush vines; no irrigation
-
VARIETY: 100% Garnacha from vines over 50 years old
-
TERROIR: Mountain vineyards at 650–700 meters elevation, planted on a mix of slate and sand with 15–20% slopes. This arid terrain and high elevation contribute to the wine’s freshness, restraint, and tension.
-
VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested on September 4 into small 18kg boxes; fermented with native yeasts
-
AGING: Aged 11 months in underground concrete tanks to preserve purity and texture
-
TASTING NOTES: Pale ruby with bluish hues. Aromas of redcurrant, crushed herbs, rose petals, and damp stone. The palate is lean, earthy, and long, with lifted acidity and a finish that lingers with savory undertones.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Grilled lamb chops, roasted eggplant with za’atar, or jamón ibérico
