Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s great classical estates, long celebrated for wines that privilege terroir clarity, structure, and longevity. Organic since 1995 and fully biodynamic since 2005, the domaine continues its hallmark approach of precision farming, whole-cluster vinification, and restrained élevage. Les Grèves is widely considered Beaune’s finest Premier Cru, a perfectly situated mid-slope vineyard defined by its gravelly, friable soils and natural elegance. Domaine de Montille’s 1.26-hectare parcel sits just south of the famed “Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus,” producing a wine of depth, purity, and quiet power.
WINEMAKER: Étienne de Montille
FARMING: Certified Organic (since 1995) and Biodynamic (since 2005)
VARIETY: Pinot Noir
TERROIR: From a 1.26-hectare parcel within Beaune’s benchmark Premier Cru, Les Grèves. The name refers to its gravel-rich soils—fine scree over clay—that define the cru’s hallmark finesse and tension. Situated mid-slope, this sector of Les Grèves is considered the appellation’s sweet spot, producing wines that balance structure, perfume, and depth.
VINIFICATION: Hand-harvested with 33% whole clusters, a signature of the domaine’s style and well-suited to the exceptional fruit quality of 2020. Fermentation and maceration emphasize purity and precision, respecting the vineyard’s character.
AGING: Aged in French oak barrels for 28 months, with 30% new oak. The élevage enhances texture and aromatic expression while maintaining lift and mineral definition. Bottled at 13% ABV.
TASTING NOTES: The 2020 Les Grèves is intense yet refined, showing deep notes of cassis, plum, and dark cherry layered with violets, spice, and a subtle peppery lift from the whole clusters. The palate is full-bodied but energized by bright acidity, with supple tannins and impressive extract. Long, balanced, and harmonious, this is a wine that marries richness with drive.
FOOD PAIRINGS: Roast duck, squab, porchetta, mushroom dishes, Comté, or herb-roasted lamb.
SCORES: 94 pts – Decanter (Charles Curtis): “Inky, dark, with cassis and plum fruit, floral edges, and bright acidity. Energetic, long, and beautifully structured. Drink 2025–2050.”
