Located in the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Maurice Charleux et Fils is a family-run estate based in Dezize-lès-Maranges, with holdings in some of Santenay’s most respected premier cru vineyards. ‘Clos Rousseau’ is among the top sites in the appellation, known for producing structured yet elegant Pinot Noir with a distinctly mineral backbone. The domaine’s style is traditional and terroir-driven, favoring minimal intervention and precise farming.
-
WINEMAKER: Vincent Charleux
-
FARMING: Lutte raisonnée (sustainable practices with limited chemical use)
-
VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
-
TERROIR: Clos Rousseau is a Premier Cru climat on the southeastern slope of Santenay, with limestone-rich soils and ideal sun exposure that lends ripeness and depth while preserving finesse. This 0.51-hectare vineyard is a direct continuation of Maranges' Clos Roussots, divided only by the Maranges premier cru Clos de la Boutières. Vines average 30 years of age, and the oak treatment is in 2nd and 3rd use barrels (with about 15% new oak employed). The tannin is a bit more velvety than that of the Maranges, and the fruit includes cherry and cassis. With aging, some interesting notes of undergrowth add complexity. This wine is an excellent accompaniment to coq au vin or beef tenderloin.
-
VINIFICATION: Traditional vinification in stainless steel; native yeasts; gentle extraction
-
AGING: Aged in French oak barrels, approximately 20–30% new, for 12–15 months
-
TASTING NOTES: Red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry layered with crushed stone, dried rose, and a hint of spice. Medium-bodied with firm yet fine tannins, lifted acidity, and a savory mineral finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Duck breast with cherry gastrique, roast chicken with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto
