Vinification: Fermented with native yeasts in cavernous cement tanks under the house. 

Tasting Notes: A zingy light bodied red wine: think spicy-underbrush, herbal notes, and just a touch of fruit. Perfect with a bit of chill and a salty Sardinian cheese. 

Sergio Loi is a 4th generation traditional Sardinian producer, whose family winery from the early 900s has always practiced no chemical farming and minimum intervention in the cellar. The Cardedu [car-DAY-do] vineyards are located on the island’s sparsely populated Southeast, on crumbling granite soils near the coast, and schist in the ragged-dry hills and cliffs around Jerzu. "Nùo" translates to naked, a reflection of how he aims to present his Vermentino in the bottle. 

From our July 2021 Bottle Club Notes:

This is a fun one, an island escape in the glass. A spicy, juicy, slightly herbal, and CHILLABLE red wine that’s made to be enjoyed in the middle of the day with a plate of salty snacks and a funky cheese. And her name is Monica --the grape, that is.

Cardedu is owned and operated by 4th generation farmer and winemaker Sergio Loi. Located in the southeastern stretches of Sardinia, the soils here are made of schist and granite that can crumble to the touch of a hand. This encourages the vines to dig deep, pulling out the stony essence of the island’s core, which you can taste in the wines. Serge’s hands-off approach, which has been practiced by his family since the early 1900s, encourages this deep sense of terroir. Once he harvests by hand, he ferments the wine with native yeasts in cavernous cement tanks under the family’s house.


Don’t take this wine too seriously. Enjoy its whimsy, appreciate its simplicity and eat a lot of great snacks with it after you pull it out of the fridge. Cheers to pretending we live on Island Time!
