Bodegas Monje Carbonica, "Hollera", Tenerife, Tacoronte Acentejo, Canary Islands
Since 1750, the Monje family has proudly produced wines of character from the unforgiving landscapes of Tenerife, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In the town of El Sauzal, the Monje's vineyard stands some 600 meters above sea level in a spot known as La Hollera. The steep, stony yet rich volcanic terrain makes mechanized cultivation unfeasible and thus each and every vine is tended to by hand.
Winemaker: Felipe Monje
Varieties: 100% Listán Negro
Terroir: This region boasts a very special microclimate due to the balance of sunshine and gentle sea breeze, making it an ideal wine making area. Producing 1,500 vines per hectare with an average age of 50, the vines grow along the ground for eight months before being raised up onto wooden stakes that support them until the grapes are picked.
Vinification: A red wine made using semi-carbonic maceration of Listán Negro grapes. It is bottled in November two months after production.
Tasting Notes: A light to medium-bodied wine with violet undertones and an intense, clean bouquet blending red berries, ashes and aniseed aromas. Bright and easy on the palate, with a cheerful tannic edge on the finish. Drink with a slight chill on it!
