Kumusha, meaning 'your home' or 'your roots' in Zimbabwe's Shona language, is the creation of Tinashe Nyamudoka. As a Zimbabwean-born sommelier who established his career in South Africa, Tinashe crafts wines that embody the essence of South Africa's terroir, emphasizing authenticity and minimal intervention.
- WINEMAKER: Tinashe Nyamudoka
- FARMING: Practicing organic, sustainable, vegan
- VARIETY: 100% Carignan
- TERROIR: The Slanghoek Valley, nestled within the Breedekloof district of the Western Cape, is characterized by its diverse terroir. The valley is framed by the Slanghoek and Du Toitskloof Mountains, with vineyards planted at elevations ranging from 80 to 250 meters above sea level. The soils vary from deep, fertile alluvial deposits to sandy shale, providing excellent drainage and nutrient availability. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, receiving an annual rainfall of approximately 700mm, which is considered high for South African vineyards. These conditions, along with the valley's varied topography, contribute to the unique character of the wines produced here.
- VINIFICATION: The grapes were picked early and fermented in a separator with 15% whole bunch. Gentle pump-overs were performed twice daily during fermentation.
- AGING: The wine underwent maturation in stainless steel tanks for the first six months to preserve its fresh fruit character, followed by an additional four months in a 2,500-liter foudre (large wooden vat), allowing for subtle oxygenation and integration of flavors without imparting strong oak characteristics.
- TASTING NOTES: Aromas of bramble fruits, herbs, and cranberry. Flavors of pomegranate and orange lead to a dry finish.
-
FOOD PAIRINGS: Complements grilled vegetables, light pasta dishes, and charcuterie boards.
