Based in the west Sonoma Coast, Peay Vineyards focuses on terroir-driven, single variety wines that underscore the beautiful expressions of the coastline's rugged terroir.
- Winemaker: Vanessa Wong
- Farming: Practicing organic
- Variety: Chardonnay {Clones: 31% Hyde/Old Wente; 26% Robert Young; 21% Hudson/Old Wente; 17% 96; 10% 95}
- Terroir / Soil: 4 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, with a strong cool climate influence. Uplifted ancient seabed, mingles with sandy loam and hints of clay.
- Vinification: Native yeast fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, stirring of lees.
- Aging: aged on lees for 11 months in 32% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
- Tasting Notes: This is a seamless, cold-climate Chardonnay with texture, raciness, and complexity. The light yellow hue with flecks of green reveals this will not be a super-rich and tropical wine and, if served just a tad below cellar temperature the oak does not peek out even a little despite its young age. The nose sets the stage with lime oil, green banana, almond, and lemon thyme aromas. The palate is extraordinary with some brioche and yeasty bread notes that arrive in the mid-palate to broaden the citrus and chalk notes in the fore-palate. The fresh acidity is not aggressive but is on the edges of your tongue and the very long finish makes you salivate long after swallowing. There is great persistence on the palate without fat.
